LEVEL 3- AKC® Canine Good Citizen®
If your dog has completed our Level 1 Dog Raising Class, you are invited to join one of Minneapolis’ official – AKC® Canine Good Citizen® class! (Dogs over 1 year of age can test out of Level 1 to move right to this class)
This program is designed for preparing to take and pass the official AKC® Canine Good Citizen® test and earn the official title!
Your instructor and evaluator will administer the test on your last day of class.

The CGC Program teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. The 10-step Canine Good Citizen test is a non-competitive test for all dogs, including purebreds and mixed breeds. The CGC award is a prerequisite for many therapy dog groups. Some homeowner’s insurance companies are encouraging CGC testing, and an increasing number of apartments and condos require that resident dogs pass the CGC test. The CGC Program also includes the AKC CGC℠ Responsible Dog Owner Pledge.
Course Overview:
Week 1: Check-in, review the importance of energy in all communication with our dogs and how that is going to be the key to every item on the CGC test, basic energy relating activities, introduction to handling, social time.
Week 2: Leash handling and walking, pass-bys, good dog introduction etiquette, dog handling, handling aversions, social time.
Week 3: Leash walking, pass-bys, good person introduction etiquette, practice supervised separation, social time.
Week 4: Review energy in all dog handling and leash handling, obedience, social time.
Week 5: Obedience, energy, social time.
Week 6: Review, test, social time, party.
The Canine Good Citizen test will be scored on these 10 items:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger
2. Sitting politely for petting
3. Appearance and grooming
4. Out for a walk
5. Walking through a crowd
6. Sit and Down on command, staying in place
7. Coming when called
8. Reaction to another dog
9. Reaction to distractions
10. Supervised separation
